DUAL CITIZENSHIP |

In accordance with Citizenship Act 2002 (Act 91) of 1st December
2002, Ghana now accepts Dual Citizenship. Since then, the Embassy
of Ghana, Tokyo - Japan accepts and processes applications from
qualified Ghanaians for Dual Citizenship.
* Eligibility
Applicants must be Ghanaians with genuine other nationalities
(Japanese citizenship).
Note that Permanent Residence Permit is not citizenship in Japan
and Ghanaians with Permanent Residence Permit do not qualify
for Dual Citizenship.
Ghanaians who have acquired other nationalities either than
Ghanaian are eligible to apply for dual citizenship.

All applications will be forwarded to the Ministry of Interior,
Accra - Ghana for final decision, processing and issuance of
the Dual Citizenship Certificate.
On acquiring the Dual Citizenship, holders will be entitled
to apply and possess Ghana Passports in addition to their non-Ghanaian
Passports. i.e. Japanese Passports in the case of Ghanaians
residents in Japan.
NOTE: It is however an offence
for a Dual Citizenship holder, to use the two Passports interchangeably
to deceive an Immigration Officer. Such offenders are liable
to a summery conviction to a fine not exceeding 250 penalty
units or a term of imprisonment not exceeding a year or both.
In this regard, all holders of Dual Citizenship are required
to travel only with their certificate of Dual Citizenship and
only one Passport of their choice.
It is envisaged that successful applicants would be able to
receive their Certificate within three (3) months. But there
are still difficulties that need to be addressed at the national
and ministerial levels. Applicants should exercise patience
and restraint for any delays in the processes.
